Medicine overview

Indications of Brizy 1 mg/5 ml

Brizy 1 mg/5 ml is indicated for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in adults, adolescents & children of 6 years of age and older with reversible obstructive airway diseases.

Theropeutic Class

Short-acting selective & β2-adrenoceptor stimulants

Brizy 1 mg/5 ml is a single isomer beta-2 agonist that differs from racemic salbutamol by elimination of (S)-salbutamol. Brizy 1 mg/5 ml is an effective bronchodilator whose primary mechanism of action is not inhibited by (S)-salbutamol.Thus, when compared with racemic salbutamol, clinically comparable bronchodilation can be achieved. Brizy 1 mg/5 ml produces bronchodilatation through stimulation of beta-2-adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscles, thereby causing relaxation of bronchial muscle fibres.

Dosage & Administration of Brizy 1 mg/5 ml

Children (6 -11 years): 5 ml (1 mg), three times daily.Adults and adolescents above 12 years: 5-10 ml (1-2 mg), three times daily.

Interaction of Brizy 1 mg/5 ml

Other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine should be used with caution with Brizy 1 mg/5 ml. If additional adrenergic drugs are to be administered by any route, they should be used with caution to avoid deleterious cardiovascular effects.

Brizy 1 mg/5 ml is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Brizy 1 mg/5 ml or any of its components.

Side Effects of Brizy 1 mg/5 ml

Hypocalcaemia, palpitation, fine tremors of the skeletal muscle and muscle cramps may occur. The other likely side effects are nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain and diarrhoea.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The drug should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk of the fetus. It is not known whether Brizy 1 mg/5 ml is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when oral Brizy 1 mg/5 ml is administered to a nursing woman.

Precautions & Warnings

Particular caution is advised in acute severe asthma as this effect may be potentiated by hypoxia and by concomitant treatment with xanthine derivatives, steroids and diuretics. Serum potassium levels should be monitored in such situations.
