Indications of Juci 500 mg

Juci 500 mg is a water-soluble vitamin and essential nutrient prescribed for the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency, as well as a range of conditions where the body's requirement is increased. It is indicated in the following:

  • Prevention and treatment of scurvy (vitamin C deficiency disease)
  • Promotes healing of wounds, burns, fractures and broken bones
  • Supports the formation of collagen in connective tissues, skin, blood vessels and cartilage
  • Enhances iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and aids in the management of iron-deficiency anemia
  • Contributes to the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the bone marrow
  • Strengthens the immune system and helps protect against many viral and bacterial infections
  • Assists in the prevention and treatment of the common cold
  • Promotes healthy capillaries, gums and teeth
  • Acts as an antioxidant, reducing cellular damage caused by free radicals and environmental pollutants

Juci 500 mg is also widely used as a daily dietary supplement to maintain overall health, particularly in individuals with poor dietary intake, increased physiological demand, smokers, and those recovering from illness or surgery.

Always take medicines according to the advice of a registered physician.

Theropeutic Class

Juci 500 mg belongs to the therapeutic class of Vitamin-C Preparations.

Pharmacology

Ascorbic Acid is an essential water-soluble vitamin that the human body cannot synthesize on its own; it must therefore be obtained through diet or supplementation. Once absorbed, it participates in numerous physiological processes vital for growth, repair and overall health.

Vitamin C is required for tissue growth and repair, normal adrenal gland function, healthy gums, and the maintenance of a robust immune system. As a powerful antioxidant, it neutralizes harmful free radicals and offers protection against oxidative stress caused by pollution and infection, thereby reducing cellular damage.

Acting as an essential coenzyme, ascorbic acid is a necessary factor in the biosynthesis of collagen, wound healing, drug metabolism, and the metabolism of cholesterol and folic acid. It also enhances the absorption of non-heme iron in the intestine, supporting the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells.

As a key nutrient, Vitamin C supports healthy skin and hair, strengthens immunity and contributes to overall well-being. Being water-soluble, excess amounts are largely excreted in the urine, and the body maintains no significant long-term stores, making regular intake important.

Dosage & Administration of Juci 500 mg

Oral Tablet Administration

  • Prevention of scurvy: 1 tablet daily
  • Treatment of scurvy: 1–2 tablets daily; the dose may be increased depending on the severity of the condition
  • Reduction of stroke risk in the elderly: 1–2 tablets daily
  • Other cases: 1 tablet daily or as directed by the physician
  • Maximum safe dose: 2000 mg daily in divided doses

Oral Sachet (Powder) Administration

1 sachet daily or as directed by a registered physician. The maximum dose is 2000 mg per day (up to 4 sachets daily).

Parenteral Administration

Juci 500 mg is usually administered orally. When oral administration is not feasible or when malabsorption is suspected, it may be given by the intramuscular (IM), intravenous (IV), or subcutaneous route. Utilization of the vitamin is reportedly best after IM administration, which is the preferred parenteral route.

  • For intravenous injection, dilution into a large-volume parenteral such as Normal Saline, Water for Injection or Glucose is recommended to minimize adverse reactions associated with IV injection.
  • The average protective dose for adults is 70 to 150 mg daily.
  • In the presence of scurvy, doses of 300 mg to 1 g daily are recommended; as much as 6 g has been administered parenterally to normal adults without evidence of toxicity.
  • To enhance wound healing, doses of 300 to 500 mg daily for a week to ten days, both pre-operatively and post-operatively, are generally considered adequate.
  • In the treatment of burns, dosage is governed by the extent of tissue injury; for severe burns, daily doses of 1 to 2 g are recommended.
  • In other conditions where the need for Vitamin C is increased, three to five times the daily optimum allowance is usually adequate.
  • Parenteral products should be inspected visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration, whenever the solution and container permit.

Always take medicines according to the advice of a registered physician.

Interaction of Juci 500 mg

Potentially Hazardous Interactions

Ascorbic acid is chemically incompatible in solution with the following agents, and should not be mixed with them:

  • Aminophylline
  • Bleomycin
  • Erythromycin lactobionate
  • Nafcillin
  • Nitrofurantoin sodium
  • Conjugated oestrogens
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Sulphafurazole diethanolamine
  • Chloramphenicol sodium succinate
  • Chlorothiazide sodium
  • Hydrocortisone sodium succinate

Useful Interactions

Ascorbic acid increases the apparent half-life of paracetamol and enhances the absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract, making it a useful adjunct in the management of iron-deficiency states.

Contraindications

Juci 500 mg is generally well tolerated, but high-dose or mega-dose therapy should be avoided or used with caution in certain patients. It is contraindicated in individuals with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
  • Hyperoxaluria, where mega-doses may increase the risk of oxalate kidney stones
  • Conditions of iron overload such as thalassaemia, sideroblastic anemia and haemochromatosis, where excessive iron absorption may be harmful
  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, where large doses may precipitate haemolysis

Side Effects of Juci 500 mg

Juci 500 mg has very low toxicity and is generally well tolerated at normal doses. Adverse effects are uncommon and are mostly associated with mega-doses. Reported side effects include:

  • Diarrhoea and abdominal bloating
  • Excessive iron absorption, which may be harmful in patients with thalassaemia, sideroblastic anemia and haemochromatosis
  • Hyperoxaluria (increased urinary oxalate), raising the risk of kidney stones
  • Hyperuricosuria (increased urinary uric acid)
  • Haemolysis in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
  • In pregnant women, intake exceeding 5 g/day may increase the risk of fetal abortion

Most of these effects resolve on reducing the dose. Patients should seek medical advice if any troublesome or persistent symptoms occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Juci 500 mg is considered safe when taken at normal recommended doses during pregnancy. However, a daily intake of 5 g or more has been reported to cause abortion and should be strictly avoided. Regular mega-dosing during pregnancy has also been linked to rebound scurvy in newborns.

Lactation: Ascorbic Acid may be taken safely during breastfeeding at normal doses. As with any supplement, pregnant and lactating women should use Vitamin C only under the guidance of a registered physician and avoid excessive intake.

Precautions & Warnings

The following precautions should be observed when using Juci 500 mg:

  • Ingestion of mega-doses (more than 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy has resulted in scurvy in neonates due to a rebound effect; such high doses should be avoided.
  • Vitamin C in mega-doses is contraindicated in patients with hyperoxaluria because of the increased risk of oxalate stone formation.
  • Ascorbic acid is a reactive substance in the redox system and can cause false-positive or false-negative results in certain laboratory tests, including those for blood glucose, uric acid, creatinine and occult blood. Patients should inform their physician or laboratory of any Vitamin C use before testing.
  • Caution is advised in patients with a history of kidney stones, renal impairment, or iron-overload disorders.

Overdose Effects of Juci 500 mg

Because Juci 500 mg is water-soluble, excess amounts are usually excreted in the urine, and serious toxicity from overdose is rare. However, ingestion of very large doses (mega-doses) may lead to:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal bloating
  • Increased urinary oxalate (hyperoxaluria), raising the risk of kidney stone formation
  • Increased urinary uric acid (hyperuricosuria)
  • Excessive iron absorption in susceptible individuals
  • Haemolysis in patients with G6PD deficiency

Management of overdose is generally supportive, including discontinuation of the supplement, adequate hydration and symptomatic treatment. In case of a suspected significant overdose, medical advice should be sought promptly.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light, at a temperature below 30°C. Keep the container tightly closed. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Use In Special Populations

Elderly: Vitamin C is well tolerated in older adults and may be used at 1–2 tablets daily, including for reduction of stroke risk. Dietary intake is often inadequate in this group, making supplementation beneficial.

Children: Ascorbic Acid is used for the prevention and treatment of scurvy in children, with the dose adjusted according to age, body weight and the severity of deficiency, as directed by a physician. Syrup and chewable formulations are suitable for paediatric use.

Patients with G6PD deficiency: High doses should be avoided due to the risk of haemolysis.

Patients with renal impairment or kidney stones: High-dose Vitamin C should be used with caution because of the risk of oxalate stone formation and hyperoxaluria.

Patients with iron-overload disorders: Those with thalassaemia, haemochromatosis or sideroblastic anemia should avoid mega-doses due to enhanced iron absorption.
