• As a base or diluent for other topical preparations (e.g., mixed with prescribed topical corticosteroids to extend or moderate their application), an adjunct use directed by a physician.

XeroSoft 8%+3% is not intended to treat infected, actively weeping, or broken skin; such conditions require separate medical evaluation.

White Soft Paraffin + Liquid Paraffin is a topical emollient combining two occlusive, lubricant ingredients:

• White Soft Paraffin (petrolatum) - a semi-solid occlusive base that forms a barrier film to reduce transepidermal water loss.
• Liquid Paraffin (mineral oil) - a lubricant oil that softens and smooths the skin surface and improves spreadability of the preparation.

Marketed dosage forms in Bangladesh include creams, lotions and ointments in varying concentration ratios of the two components; the exact percentage composition varies by brand and should be checked on the product label.

XeroSoft 8%+3% is a topical, non-medicated emollient and skin-protectant preparation combining two occlusive/lubricant agents derived from mineral oil refining. It works by forming a semi-occlusive film over the skin surface that traps moisture, reduces water loss through the epidermis, and softens the stratum corneum.

It is used across all age groups (including infants, under caregiver guidance) for everyday moisturizing and for supportive skin care in chronic dry-skin conditions such as eczema and ichthyosis. Unlike medicated topical drugs, XeroSoft 8%+3% has no active pharmacological effect beyond its physical barrier and lubricant action, and systemic absorption through intact skin is negligible.

XeroSoft 8%+3% belongs to the therapeutic class of topical emollients and skin protectants (dermatological barrier preparations), used for moisturizing and protecting dry or compromised skin.

White Soft Paraffin + Liquid Paraffin acts purely by a physical, occlusive mechanism rather than a pharmacological one:

• White Soft Paraffin forms a hydrophobic occlusive layer over the skin surface that physically blocks evaporative water loss (reduces transepidermal water loss, TEWL), allowing the underlying stratum corneum to rehydrate from within.
• Liquid Paraffin penetrates superficially into the stratum corneum, providing a lubricant, softening effect and improving the spreadability and cosmetic feel of the preparation.

Neither component is significantly absorbed into systemic circulation when applied to intact skin, and there is no receptor-mediated or enzymatic pharmacologic action.

XeroSoft 8%+3% is for external (topical) use only. Apply directly to clean, dry skin with clean hands, smoothing gently in the direction of hair growth to reduce the risk of folliculitis. Do not apply to broken, infected, or actively weeping skin without medical advice. Wash hands after application unless the hands are the treated area.

XeroSoft 8%+3% has minimal systemic absorption and no clinically significant systemic drug interactions have been established.

• Topical corticosteroids and other topical medicines: when XeroSoft 8%+3% is applied together with or shortly before/after a prescribed topical medicine, it may alter the absorption of that medicine through the skin; follow physician instructions on sequencing and timing of application.
• Latex products (e.g., condoms, diaphragms): paraffin-based emollients can weaken latex, potentially reducing the effectiveness of latex contraceptive or barrier devices used on treated skin.

XeroSoft 8%+3% is generally very well tolerated, with minimal systemic absorption and a low incidence of adverse effects.

• Folliculitis - local inflammation of hair follicles, occurring occasionally with heavy or prolonged occlusive application, especially if not applied in the direction of hair growth; usually resolves on stopping use.
• Local skin reactions - rare pruritus, mild erythema, burning sensation, or contact dermatitis, more often related to other excipients in a specific branded formulation (e.g., preservatives, emulsifiers) than to the paraffins themselves.
• Hypersensitivity reactions - rare; see Contraindications.

Formal controlled safety studies of XeroSoft 8%+3% in pregnancy and lactation have not been conducted; however, given its physical, non-absorbed mode of action, use during these periods is not generally considered hazardous. As with any topical product, XeroSoft 8%+3% should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if clearly needed, applied to the smallest area required, and only after consulting a physician, particularly avoiding application directly to the nipple/areola area before breastfeeding unless advised.

• Flammability warning: XeroSoft 8%+3% and other paraffin-based emollients soak into clothing, dressings and bedding, and can significantly increase the risk of these materials catching fire. Patients (and caregivers) who smoke or who use naked flames or other fire/heat sources near treated skin, clothing, or bedding should be warned of this risk; keep away from fire, flames, and lit cigarettes, and wash contaminated clothing/dressings regularly.
• Broken, infected, or weeping skin: do not apply to broken, infected, or weeping skin without medical advice, as occlusion may worsen infection.
• Avoid inhalation: avoid inhaling aerosolized or sprayed forms of paraffin-based products.
• Application technique: apply in the direction of hair growth to reduce the risk of folliculitis (see Side Effects).
• Eye contact: avoid contact with eyes; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
• External use only: not for internal or oral use.

XeroSoft 8%+3% is a topical preparation and clinically significant overdose from external skin application is not expected. Excessive or occlusive use may increase the risk of local folliculitis or skin irritation (see Side Effects). If accidentally ingested in large amounts, or if it comes into contact with the eyes and irritation persists, or if a severe allergic reaction occurs, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center/emergency services rather than attempting home treatment.

Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from fire, flames, and other heat sources due to flammability of the product when absorbed into fabric.

Pregnant Women

Use only if clearly needed and after consulting a physician (see Pregnancy and Lactation).

Breastfeeding Mothers

Considered low risk given minimal systemic absorption, but a physician should be consulted, especially before applying near the nipple/areola (see Pregnancy and Lactation).

Pediatric Patients

XeroSoft 8%+3% is commonly used in children and infants for dry skin and eczema care under caregiver or physician guidance; formal safety/efficacy studies specific to all pediatric age groups are limited, so extensive or occlusive use in infants should be directed by a physician (see Pediatric Uses).

Elderly Patients

No specific dose adjustment is required; elderly patients with thinner, more fragile skin may benefit from regular emollient use, following the same precautions as adults.

Renal or Hepatic Impairment

Not applicable, as XeroSoft 8%+3% is a topical product with negligible systemic absorption.

XeroSoft 8%+3% may be used long-term as part of routine daily skin care for chronic dry-skin conditions (e.g., eczema, ichthyosis), for as long as needed to maintain skin hydration and comfort. There is no fixed maximum duration for ongoing emollient use; however, if skin dryness, irritation, or folliculitis persists or worsens despite regular use, a physician should be consulted to reassess the treatment plan.

Topical Emollient / Skin Protectant (Dermatological Barrier Preparation)
