Role of Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace mineral vital for numerous biological functions, including immune enhancement, wound healing, digestion, reproduction, physical growth, and mental development. It supports normal growth and development throughout pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence, and also exhibits antioxidant properties. Zinc has been used in the management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.

In adults, zinc deficiency may manifest as loss of appetite, an impaired sense of taste and smell, a tendency toward depression, white marks on the fingernails, frequent infections, reduced fertility, prostate problems, poor wound healing, a weakened immune system, diarrhoea, mental lethargy, rough skin, and unexplained weight loss.

Role of B-Vitamins

B-vitamins are required to release energy from food and play a central role in maintaining healthy brain and nerve function, as well as the formation of healthy red blood cells in both children and adults. They are especially important for the healthy growth and development of children.

In adults, B-vitamin deficiency can cause profound fatigue and a variety of neurological manifestations, including weakness, poor balance, confusion, irritability, memory loss, nervousness, tingling of the limbs, and loss of coordination. Additional symptoms may include sleep disturbances, nausea, poor appetite, frequent infections, and skin lesions.

Interaction of Activit Z

Activit Z may interact with several medications, potentially affecting their absorption or efficacy. Notable interactions include:

  • Tetracyclines: Concomitant intake of zinc and tetracyclines may reduce the gastrointestinal absorption and serum levels of tetracyclines.
  • Fluoroquinolones: Taking zinc together with fluoroquinolones may decrease the gastrointestinal absorption and serum levels of some fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
  • HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (e.g., lovastatin): Co-administration of niacin (nicotinamide) with statins may increase the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.
  • Levodopa: Pyridoxine may reduce the effectiveness of levodopa by increasing its peripheral metabolism.
  • Phenytoin: Co-administration of pyridoxine with phenytoin may lower the serum concentration of phenytoin.

To minimise the risk of reduced absorption, spacing zinc-containing supplements several hours apart from tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics is advisable. Inform your physician of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking.
