About Alcaftadine

Indications of Alcaftadine

Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution is indicated for the following use:

Established / FDA-approved use

  • Prevention of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis (allergic eye itching triggered by pollen, dust, animal dander, and other airborne allergens). This is the sole approved indication for Alcaftadine.

Alcaftadine is a topical, once-daily eye drop intended for prophylactic (preventive) relief of ocular itching rather than treatment of an already-established severe allergic flare. It is not indicated for infective (bacterial or viral) conjunctivitis, dry eye disease, or irritation related to contact lens wear.

Dosage & Administration of Alcaftadine

Adult and adolescent dosing (age 2 years and above)

IndicationDoseFrequency
Prevention of itching from allergic conjunctivitisInstill one drop of Alcaftadine in each affected eyeOnce daily

Pediatric dosing

Same dose as adults (one drop in each affected eye once daily) is approved for children 2 years of age and older. Safety and efficacy of Alcaftadine have not been established in children below 2 years of age.

Renal / hepatic impairment

No specific dose adjustment is established or generally required for Alcaftadine owing to its low systemic absorption after ocular administration; formal studies in renal or hepatic impairment have not been conducted.

How to use

  1. Wash hands before use.
  2. Tilt the head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket, and instill one drop of Alcaftadine into the pocket.
  3. Avoid letting the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelid, fingers, or any other surface, to prevent contamination.
  4. Close the eye gently for 1–2 minutes; do not rub the eye.
  5. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5–10 minutes between different products.

Side Effects of Alcaftadine

Alcaftadine is generally well tolerated. Reported adverse effects include:

Common ocular effects (each reported in a small percentage of users)

  • Eye irritation
  • Burning or stinging sensation upon instillation
  • Eye redness
  • Eye itching (paradoxical, uncommon)

Less common systemic effects

  • Headache
  • Nasopharyngitis (cold-like symptoms)
  • Influenza-like symptoms

These effects are typically mild and transient. Patients should contact their physician if irritation is severe, persistent, or accompanied by vision changes, significant pain, or discharge.

Contraindications of Alcaftadine

Alcaftadine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Alcaftadine or to any excipient in the formulation. No other well-established absolute contraindications exist for topical ophthalmic Alcaftadine.

Frequently Asked Questions about Alcaftadine

What is Alcaftadine used for?

Alcaftadine is an ophthalmic (eye) antihistamine used to prevent itching caused by allergic conjunctivitis, a common allergic reaction affecting the eyes.

How should I use Alcaftadine eye drops?

Instill one drop of Alcaftadine into each affected eye once daily. Wash your hands first and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface.

Can I wear contact lenses while using Alcaftadine?

Remove your contact lenses before instilling Alcaftadine, and wait at least 10 minutes before putting them back in, because the preservative in the solution can be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Alcaftadine is not meant to treat contact lens-related irritation.

Is Alcaftadine safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Animal studies have not shown harm to the fetus, but there is limited data in humans. Alcaftadine should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if clearly needed and if a physician determines the benefit outweighs any potential risk.

The most common side effects are mild eye irritation, burning or stinging on instillation, and eye redness. Headache and cold-like symptoms are less common. Most effects are mild and temporary.

What should I do if I accidentally swallow Alcaftadine?

If Alcaftadine is accidentally swallowed, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center rather than trying to treat it at home.
