About Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate

Indications of Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate

Established / Approved Uses

  • Maintenance treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents in whom use of a combination inhaler (inhaled corticosteroid + long-acting beta2-agonist) is appropriate — i.e. patients not adequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroids alone and short-acting bronchodilators "as needed", or patients already adequately controlled on both an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta2-agonist.
  • Maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for symptomatic relief in patients with severe COPD (FEV1 < 50% predicted) and a history of repeated exacerbations who have significant symptoms despite regular bronchodilator therapy.

Guideline-Supported Use

Some formulations of Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate are also used as combined maintenance-and-reliever therapy (MART) in asthma, in which the same inhaler is used both for regular daily dosing and for relief of symptoms, under specific physician-directed regimens.

Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate is not indicated for the initial management of acute asthma exacerbations or as a rescue/reliever inhaler used alone.

Dosage & Administration of Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate

Dosage

IndicationAdult / Adolescent (≥18 years) Dose
Asthma – regular maintenance therapy1–2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening); maximum 4 inhalations/day
Asthma – maintenance and reliever therapy (MART), where specifically prescribed1 inhalation twice daily as maintenance, plus 1 additional inhalation as needed for symptoms (maximum 8 inhalations/day)
COPD – maintenance therapy2 inhalations twice daily

Pediatric dose: Safety and efficacy of Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate in children under 18 years have not been established for general use; it is not recommended in this age group outside specialist guidance. See Use in Special Populations.

Renal/hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is established or generally required, as systemic exposure from inhaled use is low; use with the usual caution in severe hepatic impairment. See Precautions and Warnings.

Administration

  1. Shake the inhaler well before use (for pressurised metered-dose formulations).
  2. Breathe out gently, away from the inhaler.
  3. Place the mouthpiece between the teeth and close the lips around it without biting.
  4. Begin to breathe in slowly and deeply through the mouth, pressing down on the canister to release one dose at the start of inhalation.
  5. Hold the breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
  6. Rinse the mouth with water (and spit it out) after each use to reduce the risk of oral thrush and hoarseness.

Do not use Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate to treat sudden breathlessness or an acute asthma attack; a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler should be available for such episodes unless specifically directed otherwise by a physician under a MART regimen.

Frequently Asked Questions about Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate

What is Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate used for?

Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate is an inhaler used for the regular, long-term maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It combines an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid with a long-acting bronchodilator to control symptoms and reduce exacerbations.

Can I use Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate for a sudden asthma attack?

No. Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to treat sudden breathlessness or an acute asthma attack, unless your physician has specifically prescribed it as part of a maintenance-and-reliever regimen. Keep a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler for emergencies.

Why do I need to rinse my mouth after using Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate?

Rinsing the mouth with water and spitting it out after each dose of Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate helps reduce the risk of oral thrush (candidiasis) and hoarseness caused by the inhaled corticosteroid component settling in the mouth and throat.

Is Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate safe during pregnancy?

Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate should only be used during pregnancy if your physician determines that the benefit to you outweighs any potential risk to the baby, and at the lowest effective dose. Always consult your physician before using Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

What side effects should I watch for with Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate?

Common side effects of Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate include oral thrush, hoarseness, headache, tremor, palpitations, and low blood potassium. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience sudden worsening of wheeze, chest tightness, irregular heartbeat, or facial/throat swelling after using Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate.

Can I stop Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate suddenly if I feel better?

No. Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate should not be stopped abruptly. Even if your symptoms improve, continue using Beclometasone Dipropionate + Formoterol Fumarate exactly as prescribed and consult your physician before reducing the dose or stopping treatment, since abrupt discontinuation can lead to worsening of asthma or COPD control.
