Established Use — Dry (Non-Productive) Cough Butamirate Citrate is indicated for the symptomatic relief of dry, irritating (non-productive) cough of various causes and more.
Butamirate Citrate is indicated for the symptomatic relief of dry, irritating (non-productive) cough of various causes, including cough associated with the common cold, acute upper respiratory tract infections, and other conditions that cause an irritating cough without significant mucus or phlegm production. Butamirate Citrate works by suppressing the cough reflex; it does not treat the underlying cause of the cough.
Butamirate Citrate should not be used for a productive (chesty, mucus-producing) cough, where coughing is helping to clear secretions from the airways. Suppressing this type of cough with Butamirate Citrate can allow mucus to build up in the lungs and airways, which may worsen breathing difficulty or increase the risk of chest infection. For this reason, Butamirate Citrate should not be combined with mucolytic or expectorant medicines (see Interaction and Precautions and Warnings for the full explanation).
Regulatory product information supports the use of Butamirate Citrate to suppress cough before and after surgical procedures, and during diagnostic procedures such as bronchoscopy, where coughing could interfere with the procedure itself or with post-operative recovery.
Some regional product literature for Butamirate Citrate also describes its adjunctive use for cough associated with whooping cough (pertussis) and acute inflammation of the lower respiratory tract. In these situations, Butamirate Citrate is used only as an adjunct to relieve the cough symptom, alongside appropriate antimicrobial and supportive treatment of the underlying infection, and its use should be guided by a physician.
Dosing of Butamirate Citrate is not the same for every patient — it depends on the formulation used (tablet, syrup, or drops), the patient's age, and the indication being treated. The dose of Butamirate Citrate should always be determined and confirmed by a doctor or pharmacist; the information below is a general reference only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
Reported adverse effects of Butamirate Citrate include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, and itchy skin rash or urticaria. These are generally described as occurring in a small proportion of patients and often improve with dose reduction or discontinuation of Butamirate Citrate.
Seek prompt medical attention if signs of a serious allergic reaction to Butamirate Citrate occur, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe skin rash, or difficulty breathing, or if severe dizziness, loss of balance, or a marked drop in blood pressure develops.
Butamirate Citrate is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity (allergy) to Butamirate Citrate or to any excipient of the specific Butamirate Citrate product, and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
