About Docosanol

Indications of Docosanol

Docosanol cream is an over-the-counter topical antiviral indicated for the following use:

  • Established/approved use: Treatment of recurrent oral-facial herpes simplex (cold sores/fever blisters) on the lips and around the mouth in otherwise healthy (immunocompetent) adults and adolescents. It is intended to be applied at the earliest sign of an outbreak (tingling, itching, redness, or a bump) to help shorten healing time and duration of symptoms such as pain, burning, and itching.

Docosanol is not indicated for the treatment of cold sores inside the mouth, on the gums, or for genital herpes, and it is not intended for use in immunocompromised individuals without physician guidance.

Dosage & Administration of Docosanol

Adults and adolescents (12 years and older)

IndicationDose/FrequencyDuration

How to apply

  • Wash and dry hands before and after application.
  • Apply Docosanol cream at the earliest sign of a cold sore (tingling, itching, redness, or bump), before blisters appear, for the best results.
  • Rub in gently but completely until the cream disappears.
  • For external use only; do not apply inside the mouth, on the gums, or near the eyes.

Pediatric use (under 12 years)

Safety and efficacy of Docosanol in children under 12 years of age have not been established; use in this age group should only be under medical supervision.

Side Effects of Docosanol

Docosanol cream is generally well tolerated. Reported side effects are usually mild and limited to the application site, and include:

  • Headache
  • Mild application-site reactions such as redness, itching, dryness, or a burning/stinging sensation
  • Rare allergic contact reactions (rash, swelling, itching, or hives), which would warrant stopping use and consulting a physician

Serious adverse effects are uncommon with correct topical use. Any signs of a severe allergic reaction (facial swelling, difficulty breathing, widespread rash) require immediate medical attention.

Contraindications of Docosanol

Docosanol is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Docosanol or to any component of the cream formulation. There are no other well-established absolute contraindications to topical Docosanol.

Apply a thin layer of Docosanol to the affected area 5 times a day and continue until the cold sore is fully healed, usually within about 10 days.

Can I use Docosanol during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Docosanol should not be used by anyone with a known allergy (hypersensitivity) to Docosanol or to any ingredient in the cream. It is for external use only and should not be applied inside the mouth, on the gums, or to genital sores.
