About Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate

Indications of Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate

Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate is a topical combination product containing a mid-potency corticosteroid (fluocinolone acetonide) and an aminoglycoside antibiotic (neomycin sulfate). It is indicated for the relief of inflammatory manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses when secondary bacterial infection is present or considered likely.

Established uses

  • Infected or potentially infected eczema (atopic, contact, or nummular dermatitis)
  • Infected seborrheic dermatitis
  • Infected intertrigo (skin-fold dermatitis)
  • Secondarily infected insect bite reactions and infected dermatitis of the ear (otitis externa with intact eardrum, where a topical preparation is prescribed for the external ear)

Not appropriate uses

Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate is not indicated for primary bacterial skin infections without an inflammatory dermatosis (a plain topical antibiotic is preferred), for fungal or viral skin infections, or for long-term/unsupervised use on uncomplicated dermatitis where a corticosteroid alone would suffice.

Dosage & Administration of Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate

Adult dosing

Apply a thin film of Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate to the affected skin area 2 to 3 times daily, gently rubbing in. Duration is generally limited to 1–2 weeks unless a physician directs otherwise, and re-evaluation is needed if there is no improvement within that period.

Pediatric dosing

Use the lowest effective amount for the shortest duration in children; see Use in Special Populations for pediatric-specific cautions.

Site-specific notes

Avoid occlusive dressings unless specifically directed by a physician, and avoid application to the face, groin, axillae, or other skin folds for prolonged periods because of increased absorption risk (see Precautions and Warnings).

Take exactly as prescribed by your physician; do not stop, extend, skip doses, or share this medicine with others without medical advice.

Side Effects of Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate

Local adverse effects are more common than systemic ones with Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate:

  • Burning, stinging, itching, or irritation at the application site
  • Dryness or folliculitis
  • Skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, or hypopigmentation with prolonged use
  • Allergic contact dermatitis or sensitization to neomycin (a well-recognized risk with repeated use)
  • Acneiform eruptions or perioral dermatitis with prolonged facial use
  • Rarely, with extensive or prolonged use: systemic corticosteroid effects (HPA-axis suppression, Cushingoid features) or systemic aminoglycoside effects (ototoxicity/nephrotoxicity)

Contraindications of Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate

Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate is contraindicated in:

  • Known hypersensitivity to fluocinolone acetonide, neomycin sulfate, other aminoglycosides, or any excipient in the formulation

  • Rosacea, perioral dermatitis, and acne vulgaris

Frequently Asked Questions about Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate

What is Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate used for?

Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate is a topical cream/ointment used to treat inflamed skin conditions (such as eczema, dermatitis, or intertrigo) that are infected or likely to become infected with bacteria, combining a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation and itching with an antibiotic to treat the infection.

How should I apply Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate?

Apply a thin layer to the clean, dry affected area 2–3 times daily, or as directed by your physician, usually for no longer than 1–2 weeks. Do not use more often or for longer than prescribed.

Can I use Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate on my face or in skin folds?

Use on the face, groin, armpits, or other skin folds should be limited and only under medical supervision, as these thin-skinned areas absorb more medication and have a higher risk of skin thinning, stretch marks, and systemic absorption.

Is Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate should be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding only if clearly needed and if your physician determines the potential benefit justifies the potential risk, since systemic absorption of both components is possible, especially with extensive or prolonged use. Always consult a physician first.

What side effects should I watch for with Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate?

Common side effects include local burning, stinging, itching, or dryness. With prolonged use, skin thinning, stretch marks, or allergic sensitization to neomycin can occur. Stop use and consult a physician if irritation worsens or if you notice unusual symptoms such as hearing changes.

Can I use Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate for viral or fungal skin infections?

No. Fluocinolone Acetonide + Neomycin Sulfate is contraindicated in untreated viral infections (such as herpes, chickenpox), fungal infections, and tuberculous skin lesions, as the corticosteroid component can worsen these infections by suppressing the local immune response.
