About Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Indications of Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Hydrocortisone Butyrate is a medium-potency topical corticosteroid indicated for:

Established use

  • Relief of the inflammatory and pruritic (itching) manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, including atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis, and other forms of dermatitis, in adults and in children as approved by formulation and age.

Guideline-supported / adjunct use

  • As an adjunct measure for mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis on the body (not scalp/face-first-line), typically for limited body surface area and short duration, alongside emollients and other standard psoriasis care.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis and other corticosteroid-responsive inflammatory skin conditions, at the discretion of the prescribing physician.

Hydrocortisone Butyrate is intended for short-term, localized topical use and is not a systemic anti-inflammatory or antibiotic treatment.

Dosage & Administration of Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Adult dosage

IndicationDose/FrequencyTypical maximum duration
Eczema / atopic or contact dermatitisApply a thin film to the affected area 1-3 times daily (frequency depends on formulation and physician instruction)Reassess if no improvement within 2 weeks; avoid continuous long-term use
Mild-to-moderate psoriasis (adjunct, body sites)Apply a thin film once or twice daily as directedShort courses under physician supervision

Pediatric dosage

Some Hydrocortisone Butyrate formulations are approved for use in infants from 3 months of age and older for short-term treatment of atopic dermatitis, applied once or twice daily as a thin film; other formulations/strengths are not established for use below 18 years. Always follow the age indication and dosing instructions specific to the dispensed product, and use the smallest effective amount for the shortest duration in children.

Renal/hepatic impairment

No specific dose adjustment is established for topical Hydrocortisone Butyrate, as systemic absorption is normally minimal with correct use; caution is still advised in significant hepatic or renal impairment because reduced clearance of any absorbed corticosteroid could theoretically increase systemic exposure.

General instructions

  • Apply only to the affected area(s) as a thin film; avoid excessive application.
  • Do not use on the face, groin, or axillae for prolonged periods unless specifically directed by the physician.
  • Do not apply under occlusive dressings/bandages unless specifically instructed, as this increases absorption.
  • Do not stop a prolonged course abruptly without medical advice; see Precautions and Warnings.

Side Effects of Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Local skin reactions are most common with Hydrocortisone Butyrate; systemic effects are uncommon with correct short-term, limited-area use but risk rises with excessive quantity, duration, occlusion, or body surface area.

Common

  • Burning, stinging, or itching at the application site
  • Dryness or mild irritation

Less common but significant

  • Skin atrophy, striae (stretch marks), and telangiectasia (visible small blood vessels) with prolonged/excessive use
  • Folliculitis, acneiform eruptions, hypertrichosis, perioral dermatitis, and hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation at the treated site
  • Allergic contact dermatitis to Hydrocortisone Butyrate or formulation excipients

Rare but serious

  • Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, Cushingoid features, or hyperglycemia, with excessive/prolonged use, occlusion, or use over large body surface areas, particularly in children

Contraindications of Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Hydrocortisone Butyrate is contraindicated in:

  • Patients with known hypersensitivity to Hydrocortisone Butyrate or any excipient in the formulation.
  • Untreated cutaneous infection (bacterial, fungal, viral, or tuberculous) at the site of application.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hydrocortisone Butyrate

What is Hydrocortisone Butyrate used for?

Hydrocortisone Butyrate is a topical corticosteroid used to relieve the inflammation and itching caused by corticosteroid-responsive skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis, and it may also be used as an adjunct for mild-to-moderate psoriasis on the body.

How should I apply Hydrocortisone Butyrate?

Apply a thin film of Hydrocortisone Butyrate to the affected skin as directed by your physician, usually once to a few times daily, and use it for the shortest time needed to control symptoms. Do not use more than prescribed.

Can I use Hydrocortisone Butyrate on my face or in skin folds?

Hydrocortisone Butyrate should not be used on the face, groin, or armpits for prolonged periods unless your physician specifically directs it, because these thinner-skin areas are more prone to side effects such as skin thinning.

Is Hydrocortisone Butyrate safe to use in children?

Some formulations of Hydrocortisone Butyrate are approved for infants as young as 3 months for short-term treatment of eczema, but children absorb more of the medicine relative to their body size, so treatment should be limited to the smallest area and shortest duration under a physician's supervision.

What side effects should I watch for with Hydrocortisone Butyrate?

Common effects include burning, stinging, dryness, or irritation at the application site. With prolonged or excessive use, more serious effects such as skin thinning, stretch marks, or signs of hormone/adrenal suppression (unusual weight gain, high blood sugar) can occur - contact your physician if these develop.

Can I use Hydrocortisone Butyrate while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Hydrocortisone Butyrate should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if your physician determines it is clearly needed, using the smallest amount for the shortest time, since topical corticosteroids can be absorbed into the bloodstream and their safety in pregnancy/lactation has not been firmly established.
