Paracetamol + Methionine is indicated for the relief of mild-to-moderate pain and fever (analgesic-antipyretic use) and more.
Paracetamol + Methionine is indicated for the relief of mild-to-moderate pain and fever (analgesic-antipyretic use), with the methionine component included specifically to help protect the liver against paracetamol's dose-dependent hepatotoxic potential.
Methionine is an amino acid precursor of hepatic glutathione. It is combined with paracetamol to help maintain glutathione stores that detoxify paracetamol's minor toxic metabolite, offering a measure of hepatoprotection, particularly relevant if doses are inadvertently exceeded. This does not replace the need for emergency medical treatment in overdose (see Overdose).
Paracetamol + Methionine is not indicated for the treatment of an established paracetamol overdose; specific antidotal therapy (e.g., N-acetylcysteine) administered under medical supervision is required in that situation.
| Indication | Dose | Frequency | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pain / fever | 1–2 tablets (e.g., paracetamol 500 mg + methionine 100 mg per tablet) | Every 4–6 hours as needed | Do not exceed 4 g of paracetamol (8 tablets of the 500 mg strength) in 24 hours; a lower ceiling (e.g., 3 g/day) may be advised for patients with risk factors for hepatotoxicity |
Fixed-dose combination products such as Paracetamol + Methionine are generally formulated for adults and are not recommended for children under 12 years; plain paediatric paracetamol preparations dosed by weight/age should be used instead unless a physician specifically directs otherwise.
No dose adjustment is generally required, but the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration is advised, especially with reduced hepatic/renal reserve.
Use with caution and at reduced dose/frequency in hepatic impairment (see Contraindications and Precautions); dose interval should be extended in significant renal impairment.
Paracetamol + Methionine is generally well tolerated at recommended doses. Reported adverse effects include:
