About Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a]

Indications of Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a]

Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a] is a pegylated (long-acting) form of interferon alfa-2a used for the following established indications:

FDA-approved / established uses

  • Chronic Hepatitis C (CHC): In adults and pediatric patients (5 years and older) with compensated liver disease, Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a] is used in combination with other antiviral drugs (historically ribavirin) as part of a combination regimen.
  • Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB): In adults and pediatric patients (3 years and older) with HBeAg-positive or HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B with compensated liver disease and evidence of viral replication and liver inflammation, Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a] may be used as monotherapy.

Important note on current practice

In most settings, interferon-based regimens for hepatitis C have been largely superseded by direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens, which are better tolerated and more effective. Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a] for hepatitis C is now generally reserved for specific situations where DAAs are unavailable, not tolerated, or not indicated. Use for hepatitis B remains an option alongside nucleos(t)ide analogues, chosen based on patient-specific factors.

Peginterferon alfa-2a [Pegylated Interferon alfa-2a] should only be prescribed and monitored by a physician experienced in the management of viral hepatitis.

  • Autoimmune hepatitis.
  • Hepatic decompensation (e.g., Child-Pugh score greater than 6) in patients with cirrhosis, including hepatitis C patients with cirrhosis before or during treatment.
