Frequently Asked Questions about Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate

What is Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate used for?

Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate is a combination eye/ear medicine used to treat inflammation of the eye (such as allergic conjunctivitis, uveitis, or inflammation after an eye injury) or bacterial infection of the external ear canal, when a bacterial infection or risk of one is also present.

Can I use this medicine for a red eye without seeing a doctor first?

No. Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate should not be used for an undiagnosed red eye without a professional diagnosis, because the corticosteroid component can worsen certain infections, such as viral (herpes) keratitis, fungal, or mycobacterial infections, and can mask the true cause of the redness.

How long can I safely use Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate?

Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate should be used for the shortest period your physician recommends, usually no more than 7-10 days without follow-up. Prolonged use raises the risk of increased eye pressure, cataract, delayed healing, and secondary infection.

Is it safe to use Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate in the ear if my eardrum is perforated?

No. Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate should not be instilled into the ear canal if the eardrum is perforated or suspected to be perforated, because the neomycin component can be ototoxic if it reaches the middle or inner ear.

Can Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if clearly needed and if your physician judges that the benefit outweighs the potential risk, since well-controlled human studies are lacking. Always consult your physician first.

What should I do if I notice worsening irritation or vision changes while using this medicine?

Stop using Prednisolone + Neomycin Sulphate + Polymixin B Sulphate and contact your physician promptly if you notice worsening pain, redness, irritation, or any change in vision, as these can be signs of a complication that needs medical assessment.
