About Racecadotril

Indications of Racecadotril

Racecadotril is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and infants/children (from about 3 months of age), used as an adjunct to oral rehydration therapy (ORT), which remains the essential primary treatment for fluid and electrolyte loss.

  • Established use: Acute (non-bloody, non-persistent) diarrhea of presumed infectious or functional origin, in combination with appropriate oral or intravenous rehydration.
  • Mechanism-based rationale: Racecadotril reduces intestinal hypersecretion of water and electrolytes without slowing gut motility, distinguishing it from opioid-derived antimotility antidiarrheals such as loperamide.
  • Not established: Racecadotril is not indicated for chronic diarrhea, diarrhea due to invasive bacterial infection with systemic symptoms, or as a substitute for rehydration therapy.

Dosage & Administration of Racecadotril

Dosage of Racecadotril is individualized by age and body weight, and it is always used alongside adequate oral rehydration. See Dosage and Administration below for details.

Treatment with Racecadotril should generally continue only until diarrhea resolves (see Duration of Treatment), and it should not replace rehydration therapy.

Side Effects of Racecadotril

Racecadotril is generally well tolerated. Because it does not slow intestinal motility, it is not typically associated with the constipation or abdominal distension seen with opioid-based antidiarrheals.

  • Common: Mild skin reactions (rash), headache.
  • Uncommon/Rare: Vomiting, constipation.
  • Rare but serious: Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) and other hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria and, very rarely, severe skin reactions — seek immediate medical attention if these occur.

Patients should stop Racecadotril and seek urgent medical care if signs of a severe allergic reaction develop.

Contraindications of Racecadotril

Racecadotril is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to racecadotril or to any excipient of the formulation used.

Frequently Asked Questions about Racecadotril

What is Racecadotril used for?

Racecadotril is used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children (from about 3 months of age), given together with oral rehydration therapy, which remains the essential treatment to prevent or correct dehydration.

How is Racecadotril different from loperamide?

Racecadotril reduces intestinal fluid and electrolyte secretion without slowing gut motility, so it is generally not associated with the constipation or bloating seen with opioid-based antidiarrheals like loperamide.

Can Racecadotril be given to infants?

Racecadotril granules for oral suspension may be used in infants from about 3 months of age with weight-based dosing. Safety and efficacy in infants younger than 3 months have not been established, so Racecadotril should not be used in this age group without medical advice.

Is Racecadotril safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Data on Racecadotril use in pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited. Racecadotril should be used only if clearly needed, with the potential benefit outweighing potential risk, and only after consulting a physician.

What should I do if diarrhea does not improve while taking Racecadotril?

If diarrhea persists beyond a few days, or is accompanied by fever, blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration, do not continue relying on Racecadotril alone — seek prompt medical evaluation, since these signs may indicate a condition needing specific treatment.

What are the main side effects of Racecadotril?

Racecadotril is generally well tolerated. Rare side effects include skin rash and, very rarely, angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, or throat), which requires immediate medical attention.
