About Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe

Indications of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe

Established / FDA-approved uses

  • Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is indicated, as an adjunct to diet, for the treatment of primary hyperlipidemia (heterozygous familial and non-familial) and mixed dyslipidemia, in adult patients who are not adequately controlled on a statin alone or on ezetimibe alone, or in patients already treated with both components separately, to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, non-HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, and to increase HDL-cholesterol.

Guideline-supported use

  • In patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or at high cardiovascular risk who do not reach LDL-cholesterol goals on maximally tolerated statin monotherapy, lipid guidelines support adding ezetimibe; Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe provides this statin plus ezetimibe combination in a single tablet to improve adherence.

Uses requiring combination therapy / adjunct positioning

  • Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is intended for use as an adjunct to a lipid-lowering diet, not as a substitute for dietary and lifestyle modification, and is generally reserved for patients in whom combination therapy (rather than either single agent) is judged appropriate by the prescribing physician.

Note: Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is not indicated for isolated hypertriglyceridemia or for prevention of pancreatitis due to severe hypertriglyceridemia.

Dosage & Administration of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe

Adult dosing by indication

IndicationUsual adult dose
Primary hyperlipidemia / mixed dyslipidemia (adjunct to diet)Rosuvastatin 5–20 mg / Ezetimibe 10 mg once daily; may be titrated by the physician based on LDL-cholesterol response, up to a maximum of Rosuvastatin 40 mg / Ezetimibe 10 mg once daily in patients requiring more intensive lowering, at least 2–4 weeks apart between titrations.
Patients switching from statin monotherapy inadequately controlledStart at the dose of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe that provides the current statin dose (or nearest equivalent) combined with ezetimibe 10 mg once daily; reassess lipid panel after 2–4 weeks.

Renal impairment

In patients with moderate renal impairment, no dose adjustment is generally required; in severe renal impairment not on dialysis, a lower rosuvastatin starting dose is recommended and the highest strength (rosuvastatin 40 mg component) should be avoided — see Use in Special Populations.

Hepatic impairment

Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is contraindicated in patients with active liver disease — see Contraindications.

Administration instructions

Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is taken orally, once daily, with or without food, at approximately the same time each day, and may be taken at any time of day. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water; if an antacid is also needed, it should be taken at least 2 hours after Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe to avoid reduced absorption.

Side Effects of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe

Most patients tolerate Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe well. Reported side effects include:

  • Common: myalgia (muscle aches), headache, diarrhea (more often attributed to the ezetimibe component), nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory symptoms, and mild elevations in liver enzymes.
  • Less common: nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, fatigue, arthralgia.
  • Rare but serious: myopathy progressing to rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown, which can be serious and, rarely, fatal), clinically significant hepatotoxicity, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Seek prompt medical attention for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially if accompanied by fever or dark urine, while taking Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe.

Contraindications of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe

  • Known hypersensitivity to rosuvastatin, ezetimibe, or any component of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe.
  • Active liver disease or unexplained, persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
  • Pregnancy — statins including the rosuvastatin component of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe are contraindicated because they may cause fetal harm.
  • Breastfeeding — Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is contraindicated during lactation.
  • Concomitant use with cyclosporine, due to markedly increased rosuvastatin exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions about Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe

What is Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe used for?

Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is used, together with diet and exercise, to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, and to raise HDL-cholesterol, in adults with high cholesterol or mixed dyslipidemia who need more lowering than a statin alone provides.

Can I take Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

No. Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is contraindicated in pregnancy and during breastfeeding because the statin component may harm the developing fetus and pass into breast milk. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, tell your physician before starting or continuing Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe, and use effective contraception during treatment.

What should I do if I develop muscle pain while taking Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe?

Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine, can rarely signal a serious muscle problem (myopathy or rhabdomyolysis) with Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe. Stop the medicine and contact your physician promptly if this occurs.

Can Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe be taken with other cholesterol medicines like fibrates?

Combining Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe with fibrates (such as gemfibrozil) or high-dose niacin increases the risk of muscle-related side effects and is generally avoided unless specifically directed and closely monitored by your physician.

Do I need blood tests while taking Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe?

Your physician will typically check liver function before starting Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe and periodically monitor lipid levels (usually 4–12 weeks after starting or changing the dose) to assess response and safety.

What happens if I take too much Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe?

If an overdose of Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center right away. Do not attempt to treat an overdose at home.
