About Trifarotene

Indications of Trifarotene

Trifarotene is a topical retinoid indicated for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years of age and older.

  • Established/FDA-approved use: Topical treatment of acne vulgaris of the face and/or trunk (back, chest, and shoulders) — Trifarotene is one of the few topical retinoids specifically studied and approved for truncal acne.

Use of Trifarotene for dermatologic conditions other than acne vulgaris has not been established and is not recommended.

Dosage & Administration of Trifarotene

Acne Vulgaris (Face and/or Trunk)

PopulationDose
Adults and adolescents ≥9 yearsApply a thin, uniform layer of Trifarotene cream once daily in the evening to the affected areas of the face and/or trunk.
Children under 9 yearsNot recommended; safety and efficacy not established.

Approximately one pump of Trifarotene cream is generally sufficient for the entire face; approximately two pumps are used for the upper trunk. Cleanse and dry the skin before application. A moisturizer may be applied and is generally recommended to help manage dryness or irritation, particularly at treatment initiation.

Clinical improvement with Trifarotene is usually assessed after about 12 weeks; consult a physician if no improvement is seen or if irritation is significant (see Precautions and Warnings).

Side Effects of Trifarotene

The most commonly reported adverse reactions with Trifarotene are local skin reactions, generally most pronounced during the first 4 weeks of treatment and decreasing thereafter:

  • Application-site irritation (erythema/redness)
  • Scaling and dryness
  • Stinging or burning sensation
  • Pruritus (itching) at the application site
  • Sunburn or increased sun sensitivity

Severe or persistent irritation, blistering, or signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) with Trifarotene should prompt discontinuation and medical evaluation.

Contraindications of Trifarotene

Trifarotene is contraindicated in:

  • Patients with known hypersensitivity to Trifarotene or any component of the formulation.
  • Pregnancy — as a retinoid, Trifarotene carries a potential risk of fetal harm; it should not be used in women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy (see Pregnancy and Lactation).

Frequently Asked Questions about Trifarotene

What is Trifarotene used for?

Trifarotene is a topical retinoid cream used to treat acne vulgaris of the face and/or trunk (back, chest, shoulders) in patients 9 years of age and older.

How should I apply Trifarotene?

Apply a thin layer of Trifarotene once daily in the evening to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Use a moisturizer to help manage dryness or irritation, especially when starting treatment.

Can Trifarotene be used during pregnancy?

No. Trifarotene should not be used during pregnancy because, as a retinoid, it carries a potential risk of harm to the developing fetus. Women who are or may become pregnant should avoid Trifarotene and use effective contraception; consult a physician if pregnancy occurs or is planned.

What side effects can Trifarotene cause?

The most common side effects of Trifarotene are local skin reactions such as redness, dryness, scaling, stinging/burning, itching, and increased sun sensitivity, usually most noticeable in the first 4 weeks and improving with continued use.

Can I use other acne products with Trifarotene?

Concurrent use of other potentially irritating topical products (other retinoids, strong exfoliants, high-concentration benzoyl peroxide) with Trifarotene is not recommended unless your physician specifically directs it, as this can increase skin irritation.

Is Trifarotene safe for children?

Trifarotene is approved for patients 9 years of age and older. Its safety and efficacy in children younger than 9 have not been established, so it should not be used in this age group.
