Established / FDA-approved uses

The decision to use Venlafaxine Hydrochloride for any indication should be made by a qualified physician after weighing the potential benefits against risks.

Dosage & Administration of Venlafaxine Hydrochloride

Major Depressive Disorder

PopulationDose
Adults (Immediate-release)Initial 75 mg/day in 2-3 divided doses with food; may increase gradually every 4 days or more, up to 225 mg/day (up to 375 mg/day in severe, hospitalized cases per physician judgment).
Adults (Extended-release)Initial 75 mg once daily; may start at 37.5 mg/day for 4-7 days to improve tolerability. May increase in increments of up to 75 mg/day at intervals of no less than 4 days, up to a maximum of 225 mg/day.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder / Social Anxiety Disorder / Panic Disorder

Extended-release formulation: Initial 75 mg once daily (37.5 mg/day for the first 4-7 days for panic disorder). May be titrated as needed up to 225 mg/day based on response and tolerability.

Renal Impairment

Dose reduction of approximately 25% is recommended in mild-to-moderate renal impairment; a reduction of approximately 50% is recommended in patients on hemodialysis. Doses should be withheld until the next scheduled dialysis session.

Hepatic Impairment

Dose reduction of approximately 50% is recommended in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic impairment; greater reduction may be needed in severe impairment, and use with caution.

Discontinuation

Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided. When stopping Venlafaxine Hydrochloride after more than 1 week of use, the dose should be tapered gradually over at least 2 weeks (longer if used for an extended period), under physician supervision, to reduce the risk of discontinuation symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions about Venlafaxine Hydrochloride

What is Venlafaxine Hydrochloride used for?

Venlafaxine Hydrochloride is mainly used to treat major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in adults. It may also be used off-label for conditions such as menopausal hot flashes or certain chronic pain syndromes under medical advice.

Can Venlafaxine Hydrochloride be stopped suddenly?

No. Venlafaxine Hydrochloride should not be stopped abruptly, as this can cause discontinuation symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, irritability, and anxiety, which tend to be more pronounced than with many other antidepressants. The dose should be tapered gradually over at least 2 weeks under a physician's guidance.

Is Venlafaxine Hydrochloride safe during pregnancy?

Venlafaxine Hydrochloride should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Use late in pregnancy has been linked to neonatal complications in some cases. Always consult a physician before using Venlafaxine Hydrochloride during pregnancy.

What should I avoid while taking Venlafaxine Hydrochloride?

Avoid taking Venlafaxine Hydrochloride with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping one, as this combination is contraindicated due to the risk of serotonin syndrome. Use caution with alcohol, other serotonergic medicines, and NSAIDs/blood thinners due to increased bleeding risk.

Does Venlafaxine Hydrochloride affect blood pressure?

Yes, Venlafaxine Hydrochloride can cause a dose-dependent increase in blood pressure. Your physician will typically check your blood pressure before starting treatment and periodically during therapy, especially at higher doses.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Venlafaxine Hydrochloride?

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Consult your physician or pharmacist if unsure.
