About Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide

Indications of Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide

Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide is a fixed-dose combination inhaler containing a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA), an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), and a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA), indicated for the following FDA-approved uses:

Established / FDA-approved indications

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): long-term, once-daily maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema, and to reduce exacerbations in patients with a history of exacerbations despite appropriate maintenance therapy.
  • Asthma: maintenance treatment of asthma in patients aged 18 years and older whose disease is not adequately controlled on an inhaled corticosteroid combined with a long-acting beta2-agonist, or whose disease severity warrants initiation of triple maintenance therapy.

Not indicated for

  • Relief of acute bronchospasm or as a rescue inhaler.
  • Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or acute, life-threatening episodes of COPD or asthma requiring intensive measures.
  • Use in asthma or COPD patients under 18 years of age (safety and efficacy not established).

Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide must always be used together with a separate short-acting bronchodilator ("reliever") for sudden symptoms, as it is not a rescue medicine.

Dosage & Administration of Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide

Route and technique

Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide is for oral inhalation only, using the supplied multi-dose dry powder inhaler. One inhalation delivers the full labeled dose. Do not use with a spacer device. After inhaling, the patient should rinse the mouth with water and spit it out without swallowing, to reduce the risk of oral candidiasis.

Maximum recommended strength is 200 mcg/62.5 mcg/25 mcg once daily.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide

Is Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide a rescue inhaler for sudden breathlessness?

No. Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide is strictly a once-daily maintenance medicine and must never be used to treat sudden shortness of breath or wheezing. Patients should always keep a separate short-acting rescue bronchodilator on hand for acute symptoms, and seek medical review if rescue inhaler use is increasing.

Can Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide be used for asthma in children?

No. Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide is approved only for asthma maintenance treatment in adults aged 18 years and older, and for COPD in adults. Its safety and effectiveness have not been established in children or adolescents under 18, so it should not be used in this age group.

Why do I need to rinse my mouth after using Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide?

Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide contains an inhaled corticosteroid component that can cause oral or oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush) if residue is left in the mouth or throat. Rinsing with water and spitting it out (without swallowing) after every dose significantly reduces this risk.

Is Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide safe to use during pregnancy?

There is not enough human data to be certain of the risk of Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide in pregnancy. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit clearly justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and only under a physician's guidance, since poorly controlled asthma or COPD can itself be harmful in pregnancy.

What should I do if I accidentally take an extra dose of Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide?

Taking more than the prescribed dose of Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide can cause symptoms such as a fast or irregular heartbeat, tremor, headache, or nervousness from excess stimulation of the beta-agonist component, along with dry mouth or blurred vision from the anticholinergic component. If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center rather than treating it at home.

Can Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide be combined with another inhaler containing a similar medicine?

No. Vilanterol Trifenatate + Fluticasone Furoate + Umeclidinium Bromide should not be combined with other medicines containing a long-acting beta2-agonist, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, or an inhaled corticosteroid, because this increases the risk of overlapping side effects such as cardiovascular effects, dry mouth, and corticosteroid-related complications. Always tell your physician about all inhalers and medicines you are using.
