Feelfree is a mild acidifying vaginal gel/douche combination used for the following purposes:

Established use

• Restoration and maintenance of the normal acidic vaginal pH (approximately 3.8–4.5), which supports the natural lactobacillary flora and helps create an environment unfavorable to the overgrowth of pathogenic organisms.
• Relief of vaginal discomfort (irritation, itching, unusual odor) associated with an elevated vaginal pH, such as after menstruation, sexual intercourse, or antibiotic use.
• Adjunct use following treatment of bacterial vaginosis or other vaginal infections, to help restore normal vaginal acidity after the underlying infection has been treated with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Not an established use

• Feelfree is not an antimicrobial or antifungal treatment and does not itself cure bacterial, fungal, or protozoal vaginal infections. It should not be used as a substitute for prescribed antimicrobial therapy.
• Any use as a stand-alone contraceptive method is not well supported by evidence; efficacy for pregnancy prevention is considerably lower than established contraceptive methods and such use is not recommended.

Each application (gel/pessary/douche solution, depending on formulation) contains Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, and Potassium Bitartrate (potassium hydrogen tartrate) in a buffered aqueous or gel base. See the specific product pack insert for exact strengths, as formulations vary by manufacturer.

Feelfree is a combination of two mild organic acids (lactic acid and citric acid) together with potassium bitartrate, a buffering salt, formulated as a vaginal gel, pessary, or douche solution.

The normal vagina is maintained at an acidic pH (around 3.8–4.5) largely through lactic acid produced by resident lactobacilli. This acidity is a key part of the vagina's natural defense against overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria, yeast, and other organisms. Factors such as menstruation, semen exposure, douching with alkaline products, antibiotic use, or hormonal changes can transiently raise vaginal pH.

Feelfree works by directly acidifying and buffering the vaginal environment, supporting the return of physiological pH and the conditions that favor normal lactobacillary flora.

Vaginal pH-balancing/acidifying preparation (topical gynecological preparation); Feelfree belongs to the group of non-hormonal, non-antimicrobial vaginal care products.

Mechanism of action

Lactic acid + Citric acid + Potassium bitartrate acts locally within the vagina. Lactic acid and citric acid lower and buffer the vaginal pH toward the normal physiological acidic range, while potassium bitartrate contributes additional buffering capacity to help sustain that pH over the period of use. By restoring an acidic environment, the combination supports conditions favorable to normal vaginal lactobacilli and unfavorable to the overgrowth of many pathogenic organisms.

Pharmacokinetics

Lactic acid + Citric acid + Potassium bitartrate is intended for local topical/intravaginal action. Systemic absorption of the mild organic acids and buffering salt through intact vaginal mucosa is minimal under normal conditions of use, and the product is not associated with clinically significant systemic pharmacokinetic effects.

• For vaginal (intravaginal) use only. Do not take by mouth or apply to the eyes.
• Wash hands before use. If using an applicator, follow the manufacturer's instructions for filling and inserting it.
• Insert the gel/pessary as far as comfortably possible into the vagina, preferably at bedtime to allow adequate contact time.
• Avoid use during the heaviest days of menstrual flow unless directed otherwise, and avoid concurrent use of other vaginal products (e.g., spermicides, other vaginal medications) unless advised by a physician.
• Discontinue and consult a physician if burning, itching, or irritation occurs or worsens.

Because Feelfree acts locally in the vagina with minimal systemic absorption, clinically significant systemic drug interactions have not been well established.

• Other intravaginal products: Concurrent use with other vaginal medications, spermicides, or douches may alter local pH or dilute/wash out Feelfree, potentially reducing its intended effect; avoid using other vaginal products at the same time unless directed by a physician.
• Barrier contraceptives: Effects on the integrity of latex condoms or diaphragms with concurrent vaginal acid gel use are not well characterized; if using barrier contraception, consult a physician or pharmacist.

Feelfree is generally well tolerated when used as directed. Reported adverse effects are typically local and mild:

• Local burning or stinging sensation on application (usually transient)
• Vaginal itching or irritation
• Mild vaginal redness
• Rarely, allergic/hypersensitivity reactions (rash, significant swelling) — discontinue and seek medical advice if these occur

If irritation is severe, persistent, or accompanied by unusual discharge, odor, pain, or fever, discontinue use and consult a physician.

Pregnancy: Data on the use of Feelfree during pregnancy are limited. As with any vaginal product used during pregnancy, it should be used only if clearly needed and after consulting a physician, since insertion of vaginal products during pregnancy requires caution and specific product labeling regarding pregnancy use should be checked and followed.

Lactation: Feelfree is applied locally and systemic absorption is expected to be minimal; however, formal data in breastfeeding women are limited. Use during breastfeeding should be discussed with a physician, particularly if any product component may be absorbed systemically.

• For external/vaginal topical use only; not for oral or ophthalmic use.
• Feelfree is not an antimicrobial agent and does not treat active vaginal infections. If symptoms such as abnormal discharge, strong odor, pain, fever, or persistent itching are present, seek proper diagnosis and treatment rather than relying on this product alone, as it should not delay appropriate diagnosis and antimicrobial treatment of an underlying infection.
• Discontinue use if burning, itching, or irritation develops or worsens, and consult a physician.
• Feelfree is not a substitute for established barrier or hormonal contraceptive methods; if used for any contraceptive-adjunct purpose, its efficacy as a stand-alone method for pregnancy prevention is limited, and this contraceptive claim should be regarded conservatively given limited supporting evidence.
• Avoid use in children; safety and efficacy have not been established in this population.
• Verify specific product labeling regarding use during pregnancy before use, as recommendations may vary by product/manufacturer.

Feelfree is intended for topical intravaginal use, and overdose in the conventional systemic sense is unlikely. Excessive or inappropriate use may increase the risk of local irritation.

If the product is accidentally swallowed or if a significant amount enters the eyes, causes severe irritation, or if any concerning symptoms occur, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center/emergency services rather than attempting home treatment.

Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Pediatric patients

Feelfree is not indicated for use in children; safety and efficacy have not been established in the pediatric population.

Elderly

No specific dose adjustment is established for elderly patients; use as directed, with attention to any local irritation.

Renal/hepatic impairment

No specific adjustment is established, as systemic absorption is minimal with topical vaginal use.

Duration varies with indication: for general maintenance of vaginal pH, Feelfree may be used intermittently (e.g., every 1–3 days) on an ongoing basis as needed; for symptomatic relief after menstruation, intercourse, or antibiotics, a short course of 2–3 days is typical. If symptoms persist beyond a few days of use or recur frequently, consult a physician rather than continuing self-treatment indefinitely.
