Osify supplies calcium, which can reduce the absorption of several other medicines when taken concurrently. Clinically significant interactions include:

• Tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, ciprofloxacin): Calcium forms non-absorbable chelates with these antibiotics, reducing their absorption and efficacy. Separate administration of Osify from these antibiotics by at least 2–4 hours.
• Oral bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate, risedronate): Calcium significantly reduces bisphosphonate absorption. Bisphosphonates should be taken well apart from Osify or any other calcium-containing product, per the bisphosphonate's own labeling.
• Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone): Calcium reduces levothyroxine absorption; separate dosing from Osify by at least 4 hours.
• Thiazide diuretics: May increase the risk of hypercalcemia when combined with calcium supplements such as Osify, due to reduced renal calcium excretion.
• Vitamin D-containing products: Enhance calcium absorption; concurrent excessive vitamin D and calcium intake increases the risk of hypercalcemia if intake limits are exceeded.

Osify is generally well tolerated. Reported side effects include:

Osify is commonly used as a calcium supplement during pregnancy and lactation, periods of increased calcium requirement. It should be used only if clearly needed and the potential benefit justifies use, and the recommended dose should not be exceeded; consult a physician before use, particularly to individualize the dose alongside other prenatal supplementation. There is no well-established evidence of harm to the fetus or breastfed infant when Osify is used within recommended calcium intake limits, but excessive total calcium intake during pregnancy or lactation should be avoided. Discuss use of Osify with your physician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Use Osify with caution in the following situations:

• Renal impairment: Calcium handling may be altered; renal function and serum calcium should be monitored during use of Osify.
• Total calcium intake: Avoid exceeding the recommended total daily calcium intake from all dietary and supplemental sources, including Osify, to reduce the risk of hypercalcemia and its complications.
• Vitamin D co-administration: Adequate vitamin D intake is recommended alongside Osify for optimal calcium absorption and utilization.
• Drug spacing: Separate dosing of Osify from tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, bisphosphonates, and thyroid hormone (see Interaction) to avoid reduced absorption of those medicines.
• Bovine-derived sourcing: Because Osify is manufactured from bovine bone, a historical theoretical concern regarding transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE) risk with bovine-derived bone products has been raised in the past. Reputable manufacturers use bone sourced and processed under modern regulatory standards (e.g., closed-herd sourcing, specified-risk-material exclusion, validated processing) designed to address this theoretical risk; patients with specific concerns should confirm sourcing and processing standards with the manufacturer or their physician.
• History of renal calculi: Use Osify with caution and medical supervision in patients with a history of calcium-containing kidney stones.

Overdose or prolonged excessive use of Osify can lead to hypercalcemia and/or hypercalciuria, with possible symptoms including nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, increased urination, muscle weakness, confusion, and, in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmia or renal impairment. If overdose of Osify is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center; do not attempt specific home treatment. Management is supportive and directed by a physician, and may include discontinuation of calcium/vitamin D intake and monitoring of serum calcium.

Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Renal impairment: Use Osify with caution and monitoring in patients with renal impairment, as calcium handling may be altered (see Precautions and Warnings and Contraindications).

Elderly: Osify is commonly used in elderly patients for osteoporosis prevention/management; no specific dose adjustment is generally required beyond standard monitoring of renal function and serum calcium.

Hepatic impairment: No well-established dose adjustment of Osify is required; no significant hepatic metabolism is involved.

Duration of treatment with Osify depends on the indication and is determined by the prescribing physician.
