Ovacon Gold is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing a synthetic estrogen (ethinylestradiol) and a synthetic progestin (lynestrenol). Its established and adjunct indications include:

Established / FDA-labeled use

• Prevention of pregnancy — Ovacon Gold is indicated for women who elect to use an oral contraceptive as their method of birth control.

Guideline-supported / commonly used adjunct indications

• Regulation of menstrual cycles in women with irregular cycles, when contraception is also desired or acceptable.
• Reduction of dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and heavy menstrual bleeding in women who are also candidates for hormonal contraception.

Ovacon Gold is not indicated for use in men, in women who are pregnant, or as a treatment for sexually transmitted infections. It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.

Ethinylestradiol + Lynestrenol tablets combine two active hormonal ingredients:

• Ethinylestradiol — a synthetic estrogen.
• Lynestrenol — a synthetic progestin (a 19-nortestosterone derivative that is metabolized to active norethisterone-related compounds).

Each pack typically also contains inactive/placebo tablets in some regimens to help maintain the daily pill-taking habit; strength and pack composition can vary by brand and should be confirmed on the product label.

Ovacon Gold is a combined hormonal contraceptive tablet that pairs an estrogen (ethinylestradiol) with a progestin (lynestrenol). Combined oral contraceptives are among the most widely used reversible methods of birth control worldwide and, when taken correctly, are highly effective at preventing pregnancy.

Ovacon Gold works primarily by suppressing ovulation, along with secondary contraceptive effects on cervical mucus and the endometrial lining. It is taken as a fixed daily-dosing regimen and is prescription-only.

Ovacon Gold belongs to the therapeutic class of combined oral contraceptives (estrogen-progestin combinations), used for hormonal contraception and menstrual cycle regulation.

Mechanism of action

Ethinylestradiol + Lynestrenol prevents pregnancy through three complementary hormonal mechanisms:

• Inhibition of ovulation — the combination suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, blunting the mid-cycle luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) release needed for ovulation.
• Thickening of cervical mucus — the progestin component (lynestrenol) makes cervical mucus more viscous, impeding sperm penetration.
• Alteration of the endometrium — the endometrial lining becomes less receptive to implantation.

Pharmacokinetics

Ethinylestradiol is rapidly absorbed orally, undergoes first-pass hepatic and gut-wall metabolism, and is metabolized mainly via cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Lynestrenol is a prodrug that is rapidly and extensively converted to norethisterone and related active metabolites after oral absorption. Both components are eliminated mainly via hepatic metabolism with renal and biliary excretion of metabolites.

Take Ovacon Gold by mouth at the same time every day to maintain steady hormone levels and maximize contraceptive reliability. Do not skip, double up on, or space out doses irregularly. If vomiting or severe diarrhea occurs within a few hours of taking a tablet, absorption may be reduced — follow missed-pill guidance and consider backup contraception.

Clinically significant interactions

• Enzyme-inducing drugs (e.g., rifampicin/rifampin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, barbiturates, primidone, topiramate, St. John's Wort) — can accelerate hepatic metabolism of the hormones in Ovacon Gold, reducing contraceptive efficacy and increasing the risk of breakthrough bleeding and unintended pregnancy. Additional non-hormonal contraception is generally advised during and after use of such agents.
• Certain HIV antiretrovirals and hepatitis C protease inhibitors — some agents (e.g., ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitors) can alter hormone levels; efficacy and safety should be reviewed with a physician before co-administration.
• Lamotrigine — Ovacon Gold can lower lamotrigine plasma concentrations, potentially reducing seizure control; dose adjustment of lamotrigine may be required under medical supervision.
• Antibiotics — rifampicin/rifamycins have well-established interaction; evidence for reduced efficacy with most other antibiotics (e.g., broad-spectrum penicillins) is weak, but patients are often advised to use backup contraception as a precaution during illness with vomiting/diarrhea.

Always inform a physician or pharmacist about all medicines, herbal products, and supplements being taken alongside Ovacon Gold.

Common (usually mild and often improve after the first few months)

• Nausea
• Breast tenderness or enlargement
• Headache
• Breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods
• Mood changes
• Weight change
• Decreased libido

Less common but serious (seek prompt medical attention)

• Venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
• Arterial thromboembolism (stroke, myocardial infarction)
• Hypertension
• Hepatic adenoma (rare) — see Contraindications and Precautions
• Gallbladder disease
• Severe allergic reaction

Patients taking Ovacon Gold who develop severe leg pain/swelling, chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, severe headache, vision changes, or jaundice should stop the medicine and seek immediate medical attention.

Pregnancy

Ovacon Gold is contraindicated in pregnancy. There is no indication for using a combined oral contraceptive during pregnancy, and it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed or suspected. A physician should be consulted promptly.

Lactation

Estrogen-containing combined oral contraceptives such as Ovacon Gold can reduce breast milk quantity and quality and are generally not recommended during the early postpartum breastfeeding period. Breastfeeding women who wish to use hormonal contraception should discuss progestin-only or non-hormonal options with a physician; if Ovacon Gold is considered later in lactation, it should be used only if clearly needed and the potential benefit justifies the potential risk, under medical supervision.

Boxed warning: cigarette smoking and cardiovascular risk

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from combined oral contraceptive use, including Ovacon Gold, especially in women over 35 years of age. Women who use Ovacon Gold should be strongly advised not to smoke.

Other precautions

• Individualized risk assessment is needed for women with risk factors for venous or arterial thromboembolism (e.g., obesity, prolonged immobilization, family history of VTE, older age).
• Use with caution in women with migraine without aura; discontinue immediately if migraine with aura or focal neurological symptoms develop (see Contraindications).
• Use with caution in women with well-controlled mild hypertension, with regular blood pressure monitoring.
• Periodic physical examination is recommended for long-term users.
• May affect glucose tolerance in women with diabetes or prediabetes; monitor as clinically indicated.
• Discontinue and evaluate promptly if signs of thromboembolism, jaundice, or a marked increase in blood pressure occur.

Overdose of Ovacon Gold is not typically associated with serious or life-threatening effects. Possible symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal-type vaginal bleeding in females. There is no specific antidote. If overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center; treatment is supportive and symptomatic.

Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Hepatic impairment

Ovacon Gold is contraindicated in women with active liver disease or hepatic tumors (see Contraindications), since hormones are metabolized by the liver.

Renal impairment

No specific dose adjustment is established; however, Ovacon Gold should be used with caution and medical supervision in women with significant renal disease, particularly if associated with hypertension.

Elderly

Ovacon Gold is not indicated for use in postmenopausal women; it is intended for women of reproductive age.

Smokers

Ovacon Gold is contraindicated in women aged 35 years or older who smoke heavily (see Contraindications and Precautions).

Obesity

Contraceptive efficacy of Ovacon Gold may be reduced in women with a high body mass index; alternative or additional contraceptive methods may be discussed with a physician.

Ovacon Gold may be used continuously for as long as contraception is desired and no contraindications develop, subject to periodic medical review (typically at least annually) to reassess risk factors, blood pressure, and continued suitability.

Ethinylestradiol + Lynestrenol is classified as a combined oral contraceptive (estrogen + progestin), within the broader drug class of hormonal contraceptives.

Ethinylestradiol + Lynestrenol prevents pregnancy mainly by inhibiting ovulation through suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, with additional contraceptive effects from thickened cervical mucus and altered endometrial receptivity, as detailed under Pharmacology.

Ovacon Gold is not indicated for use before menarche (the onset of menstruation). In postmenarchal adolescents, Ovacon Gold may be prescribed for contraception or approved menstrual indications using the same dosing as in adult women, after individualized assessment of risk factors and contraindications by a physician. Safety and efficacy in premenarchal children have not been established, and Ovacon Gold has no role in pediatric use outside of the reproductive-health indications above.
