Profen 100 ml is indicated for the short-term relief of mild to moderate pain and inflammation, including:

• Headache and migraine
• Toothache and dental pain
• Muscle aches, sprains, and strains
• Back pain
• Fever associated with cold, flu, and infections
• Primary dysmenorrhoea (menstrual cramps)
• Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
• Ankylosing spondylitis and other rheumatic conditions
• Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (in appropriate pediatric doses)
• Post-operative and minor injury-related pain

Profen 100 ml is one of the most widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), trusted worldwide for relieving pain, reducing fever, and controlling inflammation. It belongs to the propionic acid derivative class of NSAIDs and works by blocking the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is responsible for producing prostaglandins — chemical messengers in the body that trigger pain, swelling, and fever.

Available as tablets, sustained-release (SR) capsules, and oral suspension, Profen 100 ml is commonly used to manage headaches, muscle pain, toothache, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and fever associated with common infections. It is available both as a prescription and over-the-counter medicine in Bangladesh under various brand names.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) — Propionic Acid Derivatives

Profen 100 ml exerts strong anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic effects. It works mainly by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which significantly reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins — the compounds responsible for pain signaling, inflammation, and fever generation in the body.

In addition to COX inhibition, Profen 100 ml also suppresses certain lipoxygenase pathway products, contributing to its anti-inflammatory action. Its analgesic effect operates through both peripheral (at the site of injury) and central (nervous system) mechanisms. This dual action allows Profen 100 ml to quickly relieve pain and stiffness, reduce swelling, and improve joint mobility in patients with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

Profen 100 ml may interact with several medications, increasing the risk of side effects or reducing effectiveness. Caution and medical supervision are advised when combining Profen 100 ml with:

• Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) — concurrent use is not recommended
• Other NSAIDs (increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and ulceration)
• High-dose Methotrexate
• Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin) — increased bleeding risk
• Corticosteroids — increased risk of GI ulceration
• ACE inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) — reduced antihypertensive effect and risk of kidney impairment
• Diuretics — reduced diuretic effect
• Lithium — increased plasma lithium levels
• Cyclosporine and Tacrolimus — increased risk of nephrotoxicity
• SSRIs — increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding

Like all NSAIDs, Profen 100 ml can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include:

Pregnancy: During the first and second trimester, Profen 100 ml should only be used if clearly necessary and under medical supervision. Lactation: Profen 100 ml is excreted into breast milk in very low concentrations and is generally considered unlikely to adversely affect a breastfed infant. However, breastfeeding mothers should consult a physician before regular or prolonged use.

• Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, asthma, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease.

• Caution is advised in elderly patients, who are more prone to adverse effects of NSAIDs.

• Avoid concomitant use with alcohol, as it increases the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Patients with asthma, chronic urticaria, or nasal polyps may experience bronchospasm or allergic reactions.

Symptoms of Profen 100 ml overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, drowsiness, headache, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and in severe cases, metabolic acidosis, kidney failure, hypotension, and unconsciousness.

In case of suspected overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Treatment is generally supportive and symptomatic; activated charcoal may be administered if the overdose is recent. There is no specific antidote for Profen 100 ml overdose.

Profen 100 ml thus quickly relieves pain and stiffness, reduces swelling, and improves the movement of different joints of arthritis sufferers.

Adverse effects of Profen 100 ml on the developing fetus cannot be fully excluded. Profen 100 ml should not be used during pregnancy and for nursing mothers unless the potential benefits to the mothers outweigh the potential risks.
