Syscol is indicated for the temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort due to dryness of the eye (dry eye syndrome). It is used as an ophthalmic lubricant/artificial tear product.

• Established use: Symptomatic relief of dry eye symptoms such as burning, stinging, itching, and foreign body sensation caused by exposure to wind, sun, or other mild irritants, and reduced or deficient tear production.
• Established use: Protection of the eye against further irritation and as a lubricant to prevent dryness during activities that reduce blinking (e.g., prolonged reading, computer use).
• Adjunct use: Supportive lubrication for eyes after ophthalmic examinations or minor ocular surface irritation, as advised by a physician.

Syscol is an over-the-counter product intended for symptomatic relief and does not treat the underlying cause of dry eye.

Each mL of ophthalmic solution contains Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% w/v and Propylene Glycol 0.3% w/v as active lubricating agents, in a sterile ophthalmic base.

Syscol is a combination ophthalmic lubricant (artificial tear) formulation used for the temporary relief of dry eye symptoms. Polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol are both demulcent, water-soluble lubricants that coat the ocular surface, increase tear film stability, and reduce friction between the eyelid and cornea during blinking.

Syscol is available as eye drops and, in some formulations, as an ophthalmic gel, and is widely marketed in Bangladesh as an over-the-counter dry eye/lubricant product.

Syscol belongs to the therapeutic class of ophthalmic lubricants and tear substitutes (drugs for dry eyes).

Polyethylene Glycol + Propylene Glycol works through a demulcent and lubricating mechanism rather than a systemic pharmacologic action. Polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol are viscosity-enhancing, water-retaining agents that form a smooth, lubricating film over the surface of the eye.

Some formulations of Polyethylene Glycol + Propylene Glycol contain a gelling agent that reacts with the electrolyte composition of natural tears to form a transient, adaptive gel matrix on the ocular surface, which prolongs contact time, stabilizes the tear film, protects against further moisture loss, and supports the natural repair of the corneal epithelium.

For topical ophthalmic (eye) use only. Instill directly into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s), avoiding contact between the dropper tip and the eye or other surfaces.

Syscol is a topical ophthalmic product with minimal systemic absorption, so clinically significant drug-drug interactions are not well established.

• If using other topical ophthalmic medications (e.g., other eye drops), separate administration by at least 5 minutes to prevent one product from washing out another and to allow adequate absorption of each.
• No significant interactions with systemic medications have been documented.

Syscol is generally well tolerated. Reported adverse effects are typically mild and localized to the eye:

• Transient blurred vision immediately after instillation
• Mild eye irritation, stinging, or burning on instillation
• Ocular discomfort or foreign body sensation
• Hypersensitivity reactions (redness, itching, swelling) in sensitive individuals — see Contraindications

If irritation worsens, persists, or is accompanied by eye pain, vision changes, or redness lasting more than 72 hours, discontinue use and consult a physician.

There are no well-controlled studies of Syscol use in pregnant or breastfeeding women; however, as a topical ophthalmic lubricant with minimal systemic absorption, significant fetal or infant risk is not expected. As with any medication, Syscol should be used during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed, and a physician or pharmacist should be consulted before use.

The following precautions apply to the use of Syscol:

• For topical ocular use only. Not for injection or oral use.
• Do not use if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
• Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye, fingers, or any surface to prevent contamination of the product.
• Remove contact lenses before instillation unless the specific product is labeled safe for use with lenses in place.
• Discard the container one month after first opening, or as specified on the product label, to reduce the risk of contamination.
• Discontinue use and seek medical evaluation if eye pain develops, vision changes occur, or redness/irritation persists or worsens — these may indicate a condition unrelated to simple dry eye.
• Preservative-containing formulations may cause sensitivity with prolonged or frequent use; preservative-free single-use formulations are available for sensitive patients or frequent daily use.
• Keep out of reach of children.

Ocular overdose (excessive instillation) of Syscol is unlikely to cause serious harm and may cause transient blurred vision or watering of the eye; excess solution should be gently wiped away. If accidentally ingested, or if a large amount is instilled and irritation or other symptoms occur, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center.

Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Discard the container one month after first opening unless otherwise directed on the label.

Elderly: No dose adjustment is required for Syscol in elderly patients; dry eye is common in this population and Syscol may be used as needed.

Renal/Hepatic impairment: Not applicable, as Syscol is a topical ophthalmic product with minimal systemic absorption.

Contact lens wearers: Remove contact lenses before use unless the specific formulation is labeled safe for use with lenses in place.

Syscol may be used as needed for symptomatic relief of dry eye. For chronic or persistent dry eye symptoms lasting more than 72 hours despite regular use, or if symptoms worsen, discontinue use and consult a physician to evaluate for an underlying cause.

Polyethylene Glycol + Propylene Glycol acts as a demulcent and lubricant on the ocular surface. Polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol increase the viscosity and water-retention of the tear film, coating the cornea and conjunctiva to reduce friction, stabilize the pre-corneal tear film, and provide symptomatic relief from dryness and irritation.

Safety and efficacy of Syscol in pediatric patients have not been formally established in controlled trials; however, as an over-the-counter topical ophthalmic lubricant with minimal systemic absorption, it is commonly used in children under caregiver supervision for symptomatic dry eye relief. Use in infants and young children should be under the guidance of a physician.
