About Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone

Indications of Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone topical cream is indicated for the short-term treatment of inflamed fungal skin infections in which prompt relief of associated inflammation and itching is desired. Established (label-supported) uses include:

  • Dermatophyte (tinea) infections such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm) that are associated with significant inflammation or itching
  • Cutaneous candidiasis (yeast infections of the skin), including candidal skin-fold (intertriginous) infections
  • Candidal nappy (diaper) rash with an inflammatory component

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone is intended only for short-term use (typically up to 7 days) to control the inflammatory component of a confirmed or strongly suspected fungal infection. It is not intended as first-line, prolonged, or sole antifungal therapy; once inflammation subsides, treatment is generally continued with a clotrimazole-only preparation to complete full antifungal eradication. It should not be used for infections without a fungal component, and is not appropriate for chronic or long-term management of dermatitis.

Dosage & Administration of Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone

Adults and children (2 years and above)

IndicationApplicationDuration
Inflamed tinea (athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm), cutaneous candidiasis, candidal nappy rashApply a thin layer of Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone to the affected area(s) and gently rub in, twice daily (morning and evening)Up to 7 days; if inflammation has resolved but fungal infection persists, switch to a clotrimazole-only preparation to complete a full antifungal course (commonly an additional 1-2 weeks)

Administration notes

  • For external (topical) use on the skin only; not for ophthalmic, oral, intravaginal, or intranasal use.
  • Wash and dry the affected area gently before application unless otherwise directed.
  • Do not use under occlusive dressings or airtight coverings unless specifically directed by a physician, as this increases absorption and risk of local side effects.
  • Wash hands after application unless the hands are the area being treated.
  • Complete the recommended duration; do not stop as soon as itching or redness improves, and do not extend use beyond 7 days of the combination product without medical advice, as prolonged corticosteroid use raises the risk of skin thinning and can mask a worsening infection.
  • If there is no improvement within 2 weeks, or if the condition worsens, stop use and consult a physician to reassess the diagnosis.

Side Effects of Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone is generally well tolerated when used short-term as directed. Reported adverse effects include:

  • Common (local): Mild burning, stinging, itching, or irritation at the application site; skin dryness
  • Uncommon: Local erythema, rash, or contact dermatitis; allergic/hypersensitivity skin reactions
  • Rare (with prolonged/extensive use, especially under occlusion or in infants/large body-surface-area use): Skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, hypopigmentation, or, very rarely, signs of systemic corticosteroid absorption (such as effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis)
  • Rare (allergic): Generalized hypersensitivity reactions including swelling of the face/lips/throat, hives, or difficulty breathing — discontinue immediately and seek urgent medical care if these occur

Contraindications of Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to clotrimazole, hydrocortisone, or any excipient in the formulation
  • Untreated primary skin infections of viral origin (e.g., herpes simplex/cold sores, varicella-zoster/chickenpox or shingles) or untreated primary bacterial skin infections at the site of application, since the corticosteroid component can mask signs and facilitate spread of these infections

Frequently Asked Questions about Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone

What is Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone cream used for?

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone is used to treat fungal skin infections (such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and candidal skin infections) that are also causing significant inflammation, redness, or itching. The antifungal component clears the infection while the mild corticosteroid component provides fast relief of itching and inflammation.

How long can I use Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone?

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone should generally not be used for more than 7 days. If the fungal infection has not fully cleared once inflammation has settled, your physician or pharmacist will usually recommend continuing with a clotrimazole-only cream for a further period to fully treat the infection.

Can I use Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone on my face or near my eyes?

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone should not be applied near or in the eyes. Use on the face should only be done on medical advice, and generally for the shortest time possible, since facial skin is thinner and more prone to side effects from the corticosteroid component.

Is Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Data on Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone in pregnancy are limited, and use during the first trimester is generally avoided unless clearly necessary. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone only if your physician confirms the potential benefit justifies any potential risk, and avoid applying it to the breast area before breastfeeding.

Can I use Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone on my child?

Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone may be used in children aged 2 years and older for short courses under medical guidance. Its safety and efficacy in children under 2 years have not been well established, and nappies can increase absorption, so use in infants should only be under a physician's direction.

What should I do if my condition does not improve?

If there is no improvement after using Clotrimazole + Hydrocortisone for 2 weeks (including any follow-on clotrimazole-only treatment), or if the area worsens at any time, stop use and see a physician, since the diagnosis may need to be reassessed.
