About Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone

Indications of Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone

Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone is an over-the-counter (OTC) combination antacid and antiflatulent used for the short-term, symptomatic relief of:

  • Heartburn and acid indigestion
  • Sour stomach
  • Hyperacidity associated with peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, and peptic oesophagitis (reflux)
  • Excess gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort due to trapped gas (flatulence)

These are established OTC uses supported by FDA antacid/antigas monograph data. Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone is not intended for the diagnosis or long-term management of underlying gastrointestinal disease.

Dosage & Administration of Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone

Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone is taken by mouth, typically 1-3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or as symptoms occur. It should not be used continuously for more than 2 weeks except on the advice of a physician (see Duration of Treatment). Doses may differ between tablet and suspension formulations and between brands - always follow the product label or a physician's/pharmacist's instructions. See Dosage and Administration below for details.

Side Effects of Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone

When used as directed, side effects are generally uncommon and mild. Possible effects include:

  • Constipation - more associated with the aluminium hydroxide component
  • Diarrhea - more associated with the magnesium hydroxide component
  • Stomach cramps, chalky taste, or mild nausea
  • With excessive or prolonged use, or in patients with impaired kidney function: hypermagnesemia (symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness, low blood pressure) or aluminium accumulation/toxicity

Because the aluminium and magnesium components have opposing effects on bowel habit, the combination is formulated to reduce the likelihood of either constipation or diarrhea, though either can still occur.

Contraindications of Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone

Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone is contraindicated in:

  • Known hypersensitivity to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, or any excipient in the formulation
  • Severe renal impairment/renal failure (risk of aluminium and magnesium accumulation and toxicity)
  • Intestinal obstruction

Frequently Asked Questions about Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone

Can I take Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone every day for ongoing heartburn?

No. It is meant for short-term relief and should not be used continuously for more than 2 weeks without consulting a physician. Daily, ongoing heartburn should be evaluated by a doctor, as it may need a different type of treatment.

Will Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone cause constipation or diarrhea?

It can cause either. The aluminium hydroxide component tends to cause constipation while the magnesium hydroxide component tends to cause diarrhea; the combination is designed to balance these effects, but either can still occur, especially with higher or more frequent doses.

Can I take my antibiotics or iron tablets at the same time as Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone?

It is best not to. Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone can reduce absorption of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics, iron supplements, and digoxin. Separate these medicines from Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone by at least 2 hours.

Is Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone safe during pregnancy?

It is generally considered a lower-risk OTC option when used occasionally at recommended doses, but you should check with your physician or pharmacist before using it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, especially for more than occasional use.

Can someone with kidney disease take Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone?

Caution is needed. People with significant renal impairment may not be able to clear aluminium and magnesium normally, which can lead to accumulation and toxicity with regular use. Such patients should avoid this product unless a physician specifically directs its use.

How should I take the suspension form?

Shake the bottle well before each use, measure the dose with an accurate measuring spoon or cup, and take it 1-3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or as directed on the label.
