About Betamethasone + Clotrimazole

Indications of Betamethasone + Clotrimazole

Betamethasone + Clotrimazole is a topical combination product indicated for the treatment of superficial fungal skin infections that are accompanied by significant inflammation. Its approved and evidence-supported uses include:

  • Established/approved use: Short-term treatment of inflammatory tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea pedis (athlete's foot) caused by susceptible dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum, in patients with a clinically significant inflammatory component.
  • Not indicated for tinea versicolor, uncomplicated (non-inflamed) fungal infections, diaper dermatitis, or as first-line therapy for candidal skin infections without inflammation — a corticosteroid-free antifungal alone is generally preferred once inflammation subsides or for infections without significant inflammation.

Betamethasone + Clotrimazole should only be used for the initial, more severely inflamed phase of the infection; therapy is usually switched to a topical antifungal alone once inflammation has improved.

Dosage & Administration of Betamethasone + Clotrimazole

Adults and adolescents (17 years and older)

IndicationFrequencyMaximum duration
Tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm)Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily (morning and evening)Up to 2 weeks
Tinea pedis (athlete's foot)Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily (morning and evening)Up to 4 weeks

Gently massage Betamethasone + Clotrimazole into the affected and surrounding skin. If there is no clinical improvement after the initial treatment period, the diagnosis should be reassessed by a physician. Treatment beyond the recommended duration is not advised because of the risk of skin thinning and hormonal side effects from the corticosteroid component. See Duration of Treatment for details.

Children

Not recommended for patients under 17 years of age; safety and efficacy have not been established in this age group (see Use in Special Populations).

Side Effects of Betamethasone + Clotrimazole

Most side effects of Betamethasone + Clotrimazole are local and mild, occurring at the site of application:

  • Common: burning, stinging, itching, redness, dryness, or irritation at the application site.
  • Less common: skin thinning (atrophy), stretch marks (striae), visible small blood vessels (telangiectasia), lightening of skin color (hypopigmentation), contact dermatitis, folliculitis, and secondary skin infection.
  • Rare, with prolonged or extensive use: systemic corticosteroid effects including HPA-axis suppression, Cushingoid features (moon face, weight gain), elevated blood glucose, and in children, growth suppression — see Precautions and Warnings and Use in Special Populations.

Discontinue use and consult a physician if irritation, sensitization, or worsening of the skin condition occurs.

Contraindications of Betamethasone + Clotrimazole

Betamethasone + Clotrimazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to betamethasone, clotrimazole, other corticosteroids, other imidazole antifungal agents, or any excipient of the specific product formulation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Betamethasone + Clotrimazole

What is Betamethasone + Clotrimazole used for?

Betamethasone + Clotrimazole is a combination cream/ointment used to treat inflamed fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm, where both antifungal treatment and relief of inflammation/itching are needed.

How long can I use Betamethasone + Clotrimazole?

Treatment is usually limited to 2 weeks for groin or body ringworm and up to 4 weeks for athlete's foot. Do not use it for longer than your physician recommends, and see a doctor if there is no improvement within the first 1–2 weeks.

Can I use Betamethasone + Clotrimazole on my face?

Betamethasone + Clotrimazole should be avoided on the face and skin folds for prolonged periods because these areas are more prone to skin thinning, stretch marks, and other steroid-related skin changes. Use only as directed by a physician.

Is Betamethasone + Clotrimazole safe during pregnancy?

There are no adequate studies confirming safety in pregnancy. Betamethasone + Clotrimazole should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, under medical supervision.

Can Betamethasone + Clotrimazole be used in children?

Betamethasone + Clotrimazole is not recommended for children under 17 years old because children absorb more medicine through the skin and are at higher risk of hormonal (HPA-axis) side effects. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established.

What should I do if I accidentally swallow Betamethasone + Clotrimazole or use too much?

Seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center/emergency services. Do not try to manage an overdose at home.
