Frequently Asked Questions about Elagolix Sodium

What is Elagolix Sodium used for?

Elagolix Sodium is used to manage moderate to severe pain caused by endometriosis in women of reproductive age.

How should I take Elagolix Sodium?

Take Elagolix Sodium by mouth at the same time each day, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your physician. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Can I take Elagolix Sodium if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No, Elagolix Sodium is contraindicated in pregnancy because it may increase the risk of early pregnancy loss. Pregnancy should be ruled out before starting, and a non-hormonal contraceptive should be used during treatment and for 28 days after stopping. In breastfeeding, Elagolix Sodium should be used only if clearly needed and after consulting a physician, since effects on the nursing infant are not well studied.

What are the main risks of Elagolix Sodium?

The main concerns are dose- and duration-dependent loss of bone mineral density (which may not fully reverse), liver enzyme elevations, changes in cholesterol/lipid levels, and mood changes including rare reports of suicidal thoughts. Treatment duration is therefore limited based on dose.

Can Elagolix Sodium be combined with hormonal contraceptives?

Estrogen-containing hormonal contraceptives are not recommended with Elagolix Sodium because they may reduce its effectiveness. A non-hormonal method of contraception should be used instead.

Is Elagolix Sodium safe for children?

Elagolix Sodium is not approved for use in children; safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established.
