Frequently Asked Questions about Flurbiprofen

What is Flurbiprofen used for?

Flurbiprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, to manage mild-to-moderate pain, and to treat primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). An ophthalmic form of Flurbiprofen is also used to prevent pupil constriction during eye surgery.

Can I take Flurbiprofen with other pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen?

No. Combining Flurbiprofen with aspirin or other NSAIDs increases the risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers without added pain relief benefit, and may reduce aspirin's heart-protective effect. Avoid taking them together unless specifically advised by your physician.

Is Flurbiprofen safe during pregnancy?

Flurbiprofen should be used in early pregnancy only if clearly needed, after consulting a physician, and is contraindicated in the third trimester because it can cause premature closure of a blood vessel in the fetal heart (ductus arteriosus) and other complications. Always consult your doctor before using Flurbiprofen if you are pregnant.

What are the most serious side effects of Flurbiprofen?

Flurbiprofen can, in rare cases, cause serious gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration, cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke, kidney problems, and allergic reactions. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience black or bloody stools, chest pain, sudden weakness, severe stomach pain, or difficulty breathing while taking Flurbiprofen.

Who should not take Flurbiprofen?

Flurbiprofen should not be used by people with known hypersensitivity to Flurbiprofen or other NSAIDs, those with a history of asthma or allergic reactions triggered by aspirin/NSAIDs, patients having coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, women in the third trimester of pregnancy, and people with active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer disease.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Flurbiprofen?

If you miss a dose of Flurbiprofen, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose of Flurbiprofen to make up for a missed one.
