Medicine overview

Indications of Betameson-N 15 gm

Betameson-N 15 gm is indicated for various conditions, including eczema, prurigo nodularis, psoriasis, neurodermatoses, seborrheic dermatitis, contact sensitivity reactions, systemic steroid therapy in generalized erythroderma, secondarily infected insect bites, as well as anal and genital intertrigo. It is particularly effective when a secondary bacterial infection is present.

Theropeutic Class

Aural steroid & antibiotic combined preparations

Pharmacology

Betamethasone is an active topical corticosteroid which produces a rapid response in those infammatory dermatoses that are normally responsive to topical corticosteroid therapy, and is often efective in the less responsive conditions such as psoriasis. Neomycin sulphate is a broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic efective against the majority of bacteria commonly associated with skin infections.

Dosage & Administration of Betameson-N 15 gm

Apply a small amount of Betameson-N 15 gm to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily until you observe improvement. For children, limit the treatment course to 5 days.

Contraindications

The conditions or situations of concern include acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, perianal and genital pruritus, primary cutaneous viral infections (such as herpes simplex and chickenpox), as well as hypersensitivity to any component of Betameson-N 15 gm.

Side Effects of Betameson-N 15 gm

Common side effects may include burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, and miliaria.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There have been no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women regarding teratogenic effects from topically applied corticosteroids. Therefore, they should not be used extensively for a prolonged period during pregnancy.

Precautions & Warnings

The prolonged use of Betameson-N 15 gm therapy should be minimized, particularly in infants and children. Children up to the age of four should not undergo topical steroid treatment for more than 3 weeks without a medical review.
